BPOE 271 (Oswego NY) Service Awards

Oswego Elks Lodge No.271 recently hosted an official visitation to the Ontario District by the NYS Elks Association President William J Reedy, Jr.  They held an awards dinner recognizing local Police and Sheriff Officer’s as well as Eagle Scout and Student of the Month honorees. Oswego Elks Lodge No.271 is proud and honored to hold this event each year and recognize all those who dedicate their lives to helping and protecting the citizens of their community. They are all heroes in our eyes and we thank them and their families for your dedication and service.

This year the event was dedicated to two additional people.  Michael Coad PER and R. Heath.

For many years Mike chaired this event.  It was the one event he was most proud of. No one realized how much work he put into organizing the event and I would like to thank him for what he did to make a success. His fellow Lodge Members and friends will miss him and we will write his virtues on the tablets of love and memory.

On January 28, 2017, the Oswego County Fire Service lost a brother firefighter who exemplified the “Volunteer Firefighter.” Over his 44 years in the fire service, Al touched generations of firefighters — both volunteer and career — and they are all better for it. Along the way, Al and his wife, Jeanette, raised three boys, who in turn gave him his pride and joy (four grandchildren and three step-grandchildren).

A special Lifetime Achievement award was presented to retired Sheriff Robert J. Lighthall, the Coordinator of Oswego County’s Stop DWI program. Robert Lighthall was Oswego Lodge’s nominee for the Enrique Camarena award for outstanding dedication to the advancement of a drug free society. The following

Derek Caramella was awarded Teen of the month and Ryan Tharrett was recognized for his Eagle Scout Award.

Service Awards were presented to the following:

Oswego City Police                         Sergeant Damian Waters

Oswego County Sheriff’s               Patrol Officer Joseph Harpst

SUNY Oswego Police                     Lieutenant Matthew Barbeau

BPOE 2367( Camillus NY) NYSEA State President Bill Reedy Jr Homecoming

Dear Friends and Family:

Camillus Elks Lodge No. 2367 recently hosted a “Homecoming” celebration for NYS Elks Association President William J. Reedy, Jr. and his wife Lisa.  Over 225 people gathered from throughout the state to congratulate them and wish them luck in their future endeavors.   Bill and Lisa jointly issued the following statement:

One of my favorite quotes is “Life is not made up of all the breaths you take, but of the moments that take your breath away.”  During this past year, we have had many such moments that have taken our breath away.

First of all, Lisa and I would like to thank everyone throughout the state for the generous hospitality, support and friendship that you showed to us throughout the past year. We have had a wonderful time meeting all of you and seeing your Lodges.  We learned a lot as we watched you and the members of your lodges in action and as a result, I can once again proclaim that Elkdom is alive and strong in N.Y. State.

I have learned that every lodge in our state has something very special about it and that every lodge has a strong passion and pride with regards to all that they accomplish.  It has truly been a special honor for us to be able to witness and at times participate in these achievements.  We have made friends for life and look forward to being with you at conventions and to revisiting your lodges so that we can update and reminisce. All of you welcomed us, and our traveling companions during each and every visit.  You went out of your way so that we would have a great time and you made us feel like we were members of your lodge. You gave us great feedback, teased us, took us under your wing and treated us like family.   It has been a special feeling that will last with us forever.

A special thanks to my Presidential Committee, the Ontario District and the Camillus Elks Lodge for all your support and guidance and for allowing us to shine in the glory while you worked diligently behind the scenes.

We will never forget our year of travel throughout our great State, the sites we visited, friends we made and the honor and pride we felt as we served as your State President and First Lady.  We are very proud of all of you and encourage you to keep on spreading the word about all of our important programs, and what we accomplish as Elks.  Lastly, please, don’t forget to ask that very important question when you are with nonmembers of Elkdom.  “Would you like to become an Elk?”   That question is the key to our future.

All of you are very special to us and because of you, our lives have been change forever. ELKS, truly are the Best People on Earth.

Love

Bill and Lisa

BPOE 474 (Auburn, NY) Disabled American Veterans (DAV) 2017_04

Auburn Elks Lodge No. 474 continues its unwavering support for our veterans through Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Joseph E Rice Chapter 103.
Thanks to Computer Sciences Corporation in So. Windsor, Ct., the Auburn DAV chapter and the Auburn Elks Lodge 474 were able to obtain, refurbish and donate five additional lap top computers to meet the needs of five veterans who do not have access to laptop computers.  This donation brings the total to 45 Veterans who have received laptops.
Under this program veterans who do not have laptop computers to support their vocational rehabilitation training and education efforts can obtain laptop computers at no charge.  This program enables veterans to have their own laptops computer that they can use for many needs from checking on medical appointments with their local VA medical center or on line education courses through colleges of their choice.  Should the veteran be remotely located the laptop can be a valued video communication with teachers, friends and loved ones.
Although they have already donated 45 computers there are many additional veterans requesting one.  This program could only be successful with the co-operation of CSC, DAV, and the Elks.
Auburn Elks Lodge 474 continues to provide support to the DAV by allowing them to hold their monthly meetings at the lodge at no cost.

On this day, it was not only Veterans helping Veterans but Auburn Elks lodge 474 helping Veterans.  Auburn Elks Lodge 474 provided a place for the local Veterans to meet the DAV district leader and the Lodge also provided a luncheon.

After the presentation and lunch, each Veteran that had issues or concerns was given the opportunity to meet with the district leadership to document them.  The DVA has a commitment to work with the Veterans on their specific issues and concerns.  Just prior to the end of the meeting, the DAV chapter 103 and the Elks Lodge 474 raffled off a reconditioned laptop to one of the attending Veterans.

At the end of the meeting, the district leader thanked the Lodge for their support and commitment to Veterans.   Auburn Elks Lodge is planning on having these meetings again in our continuing support of local Veterans.
